Democrats release Garrett County Platform

PRESS release, September 2020

The Garrett County Democratic Central Committee and the Garrett County Democratic Club will release a Democratic Platform for Garrett County this week in anticipation of a very special September 15th anniversary.

Next Tuesday, September 15, is the 50th anniversary of the 1970 Garrett County Primary Election, which featured one of the highest levels of voter participation in the nation. The following November, Garrett County residents elected three Democrats to the county commission: Wayne Hamilton, Bernard Guy and Earl Opel.

“Democrats in Garrett County are often asked what we stand for,” says Judy Carbone, chair of the Garrett County Democratic Central Committee. “This platform was produced after extensive interviews with dozens of county residents in all walks of life. We hope that it not only answers the question but provides a starting point for discussion and debate,” said Carbone.

Divided into sections on education, economy, environment, healthcare, poverty and inequality, and community mind-set, the platform, says Carbone, is also a benchmark for residents considering becoming Democratic candidates for public office.

Charlene Pullias, president of the Garrett County Democratic Club says, “We are proud to contribute to a rich dialogue on the future of the county.” The document, she says, “takes an honest view at current day challenges” but it also calls upon all residents to revisit the bipartisanship and participation that was a hallmark of county affairs long before the more recent political polarization set in.

The platform’s preamble states: “Whatever our viewpoints or ideology, a state politics dominated by our urban centers will only pay sufficient attention to the needs of our more rural areas when our citizens speak with one, united voice.”
